About Intrepid Travel

Intrepid was started by two friends from Melbourne, Australia, in 1988 after embarking on a trip through the wilds of Africa in a modified ex-council truck, crammed with friends, supplies, a handful of aviator sunglasses and a case or two of beer. Could this type of travel be something others would be interested in? The answer was a resounding yes and today we send 100,000 travellers across the globe each year with the help of a staff of 1,000.

After three decades, founders Darrell and Manch, feel they know what travellers want. We get that it’s a big decision to fly across the world to wander the souks of Marrakech or enjoy a dreamy Angkor sunrise. We understand that you’re looking for a balance of inclusions and free time, a mix of classic highlights and local secrets you won’t find on Google. And of course, an authentic real life experience. Our leaders are born and raised in-country, and they know their destination better than anyone. So you’ll do more than just see a place, you’ll live it. We believe the real magic happens well away from the beaten path. It’s the little noodle bars, hidden galleries and backstreet bodegas and real life experiences you won’t find in a search engine. While it could be the instant you see one of the world’s great icons for the first time, it is more likely to be the moment you find yourself in the middle of a village square soccer game, being treated to a home-cooked meal by your new local friends or sharing a laugh with your fellow travellers as you try a new mode of transport … camel anyone? We realise the world is a really big place. And there’s a plethora of different languages to learn, borders to cross and cultures to negotiate. Small group adventure travel makes these things easy and allows you to maximise your precious time off. Group size will vary depending on where and how you’re travelling, but the average group size is about 10.

Responsible Tourism

Responsible travel is about the attitude you take and the choices you make.
It's about choosing to respect and benefit the local people, their cultures, economies and the environment. While it’s up to all of us to be conscientious globetrotting individuals, Intrepid makes it easier by building responsible travel fundamentals into each and every one of our trips. When you hit the road with us, you leave lighter footprints, invest your travel dollars in local communities, show respect and curiosity for different cultures and traditions, and experience genuine connections with the people you meet along the way.

Intrepid’s top 10 responsible travel tips
Before leaving home learn as much as possible about the countries you are visiting – the language, religion and culture, the local rules and values.
Learn what’s appropriate behaviour and body language. Like the concept of ‘saving face” in Asia or giving the thumbs up in western or central Europe.
Support locally owned businesses, hotels, restaurants and other services. Eat local food and drink local brands and brews. Use public transport, hire a bike or walk where convenient – you'll meet local people and get to know the place.
Think first. It’s best not to eat in restaurants, shop in stores or visit local shows, markets or zoos that promote cruelty or exploitation of endangered species.
Shop from traditional artisans and for locally made products, helping keep traditional crafts alive and favour local products over imported items. Bargain if that is a local practice, but bear in mind that a small amount to you could be extremely important to the seller.
Dress respectfully with an awareness of local standards. Dress modestly at religious sites and check what swim wear is suitable for pools and the beach.
Always ask first before photographing or videoing people. Send them back copies of photos to help make it a two-way exchange.
Be wary of giving gifts or money to beggars, children and people you have just met. Supporting the community through a local school, clinic or development project may be more constructive.
Leave only footprints…take care of the environment as you would your own home. Take out all you take in, to areas away from the cities. Use alternatives to plastic and say ‘No’ to plastic bags. For cigarette butts, an empty film container makes a perfect portable container.
After returning home think how you can support programs and organisations (like those The Intrepid Foundation work with) that are working to protect the welfare, culture and environment of where you’ve been lucky to visit. ....less

How we monitor safety on our trips

We constantly monitor global issues, ensuring we have an in-depth understanding of the areas we visit. With multiple operational offices around the world in a variety of destinations, Intrepid has access to real-time safety updates and information within the countries we travel to. These staff are available to provide support to travellers on the ground if required.

We understand that plans change. That’s why, when you book with us, you have the flexibility to change your travels and re-book when it suits you.

If we're unable to run your trip due to COVID-19, you’ll automatically receive a credit of the monies paid to Intrepid (excluding any third-party costs such as flights or insurance).

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

The Intrepid tour to Everest Base camp is the best tour I have ever done. The itinerary was perfect and the guides were incredible. They look after the participants constantly and are constantly on the look out for any issues with altitude. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this trip it was amazing

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

We booked the 10 day Group Explorer package with them for Vietnam and Wow !!! . It was fantastic. We were initially a bit anxious, but that all settled after day one. There is a fair bit of travelling and moving involved, but we'll woth it as you get to see and experience loads .Our Guide Huy was brilliant and looked after us really well from local knowledge to restaurants and tour information and activities . It's worth doing folks with intrepid . Well done, keep up that standard of service.

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

I have recently completed the Premium India In Depth tour. A most wonderful introduction to this amazing continent. From the Taj Mahal to Tigers 🐅 in the wild , dining whe the locals eat and a couple of meals with families was a great way to embrace the people and their culture. Magnificent architecture,be it Forts or Shrines. The most informative and inspiring of guides was great to have with us. Mumbai to Delhi and 6 more cities plus A Safari included. Best trip to experience India 🇮🇳. Prepare to have all your senses assaulted . Go for it.

We had a fantastic time on the Botswana Highlights tour recently. We chose Intrepid because it seemed to suit what we wanted - well planned itinerary, small group, comfortable without being overly luxurious (and pricey), and supportive of the local community and environment. Highlights of Thailand, November 2024 An absolutely fantastic tour which ticked every box for me, and more. I'm a single female traveler and have traveled a lot alone, but wanted to try out this type of organised, small group travel. The quality and variety of the content of the tour exceeded my expectations - a brilliant blend of interesting activities, from incredible temples and Buddhas to cooking class to cycling around a UNESCO site to getting close to elephants. Plus each hotel was excellent. Partly I chose this tour because it's overland rather than flying, and I'm glad I did. You can cover big distances quickly flying but I loved seeing and experiencing the landscapes and people close up. Our drivers were excellent too, and a train journey added an interesting experience. I got to spend 10 days with a great group of fellow travelers who I felt completely safe and comfortable with. And our guide Damrong was an absolute star, so knowledgeable with an endless stream of interesting facts, funny, hardworking, kind and caring. Big thumbs up for Damrong and Intrepid. I'll definitely be looking for my next trip with Intrepid when I get home! As a single female traveler my first trip with Intrepid ticked every box and completely exceeded my expectations. The content of the tour was fantastic, and I genuinely felt in safe hands. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Intrepid and I'll definitely be booking my next trip with them.

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

I have just completed my first trip with Intrepid to Southern Africa, and I loved every moment of it! We saw so much wildlife, stayed in some beautiful places, and learnt so much about the countries and people in a very short space of time. Our group leader, Admore, was exceptionally organised, coordinating every detail of our packed itinerary and keeping us informed along the way. The recruitment of a local group leader who can share their knowledge and fix the smallest of issues quickly really sets these trips apart, ensuring you feel safe and looked after at all times. Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

we used intrepid travels many times, we did Asia, Jordan, Uzbekistan. The itineraries are varied and you can find the best offer on your budget. We normally chose to use the intrepid trips as we have little time to organize the trips in locations where there might a language/transport barrier. Uzbekistan for example was great as we had a great guide , bus since the main foreign language there is Russian it would have been a little difficult to go around. Generally we enjoy the people in our groups and the tour leaders are mostly very nice and can give you many insights in the country.

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Just came back off an amazing trip to Turkey. No I didn’t stay in an all inclusive resort for a week, I went on a highlights of Turkey tour with Intrepid and saw the real beating heart of Turkey. I went in with no expectations and was amazed by the culture, history and people of Turkey but even more so with Intrepid who put a really thoughtful itinerary together which yes has you going to all the important tourist spots but also includes visiting small local communities and using smaller family run hotels which I for one really enjoyed and appreciated. I have a list of places I want to visit including Kilimanjaro, Jordan, Morocco, Egypt and Costa Rica and am definitely going to be checking out Intrepids trips for these. Thank you Intrepid for a great trip.

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

I did the 11 day Armenia & Georgia trip and it was absolutely magical! Our guide Jenya was amazing as was David our driver in Armenia. Intrepid arranges these local cooking class lunches which were some of my favorite things we did. We only had three people in our group so it was really nice. I traveled Solo which they let you share a room with someone else or for a little extra you can have your own room which I did. Yes Armenia is a little rough and not as nice as Georgia but when you got out of Yerevan it was beautiful and the Armenian’s are very warm and Friendly. Can’t wait to take more trips with Intrepid! If you do not play well with others this is not a trip for you. Intrepid is group travel so if you’re bossy or don’t get along with people please don’t make others suffer, lol It’s a democracy and usually done by group consensus. Also do not be a cheap tipper double the recommended tip they suggest especially for your trip guide! And people who are cheap tippers it says a lot about your character. If you can’t afford to tip well you shouldn’t take the trip! Remember an extra five or $10 can make a real difference in these peoples lives especially considering the average salary is $300-$500 a month in Georgia and Armenia. Let that sink in.

Uzbekistan comfort tour was fantastic. Hotels were clean & well located. The pace of the travel (2 days in each city) during the holiday was perfect. Transport was comfortable & air conditioned. Visiting local homes and seeing the artisanal craftsmen and craftswomen was a definite highlight for me. The people were friendly and curious. The monuments, madrassas, mosques, minerettes were breath taking. Our local guide Lochin was incredible! He made our trip easy, memorable and took us to the best places at exactly the right time to avoid any crowds. His historical knowledge and story telling ability was impeccable and captivating. He took us to the best of each place including the shops that sold quality products and allowed us ample time to explore on our own. Khiva was a lovely end to our trip, definitely not one to miss. Uzbekistan is still an authentic & beautiful country to visit. It captured both our heart and minds.

We've recently returned from the Moroccan Discovery trip which was fabulous. The tour guide Mo was so attentive, couldn't do enough for us and nothing was too much trouble. We learned so much and saw such varied landscapes. Our driver Medi was also so helpful and friendly. Can't recommend the trip and Intrepid highly enough. Have travelled before with Intrepid and will definitely book again.
